Toyota and Subaru Make a Scion

by Import RPM on November 12, 2008

A sport coupe developed jointly by Toyota and Subaru has been known to be in the works for months. However, rumors surrounding the coupe are now indicating that this coupe may emerge as the next generation Scion tC.

Originally, the coupe was going to be marketed jointly as a Toyota and as a Subaru, but the specifics of which version American consumers would get was not concrete. Turns out, if the latest rumors prove to be true, that the coupe would more likely sport a Scion badge here in the States instead of a Toyota badge.

A Subaru version of the coupe still remains a feasible option as the automaker may benefit from a sporty coupe to compliment the recently redesigned 4-door and 5-door Impreza and WRX.

The plan to make this mystery coupe a Scion rather than a Toyota makes plenty of sense. The next generation tC isn’t due until around 2010 and Toyota has already indicated that it will also feature a rear-wheel drive platform. Additionally, the youth-oriented brand will need to up the ante with the next tC, which was a hit when it launched but has since been faced with falling sales. To make matters worse, sales of the latest xB have also fallen flat, making the next tC a vital model for the entire Scion brand.
