Smart hasn’t had the most successful run in the U.S., but that hasn’t stopped the company from trying. Knowing Americans love pickups, Smart will unveil its vision of what a truck should be at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

Of course the Smart For-Us pickup won’t be going toe-to-toe with F-150s or Rams, but it could be useful for urbanites that still need the practicality of a truck. The For-Us concept features a longer wheelbase and wider track than the ForTwo, along with a small bed, a 75-horsepower electric motor, and extremely short overhangs at the front and rear that make it exceedingly compact.

Smart CEO Dr. Annette Winkler asserted, “We at Smart love pick-ups – if they are small on the outside, large on the inside, very safe and extremely comfortable. With the Smart For-Us a petrol station is no longer required!”

Although retail Smart sales aren’t too impressive these days, the company is attempting to excite American consumers through initiatives like Car2Go, a car sharing program that’s being introduced in numerous cities around the country. Perhaps with a pickup, Smart will finally be able to get some much-needed attention.
