Kia is quickly making a name for itself in the hybrid vehicle market, thanks to launch of the gas-electric variant of the beloved Kia Optima. Additionally, the automaker has just begun getting its feet wet in the all-electric vehicle market.
The Kia Ray, recently unveiled in Korea, is the automaker’s first production electric vehicle. It features a range of about 86 miles and can be charged with a quick-charger in as little as 25 minutes. With a 220-volt outlet, the Ray will require about six hours for a full charge.
Powering the Kia Ray EV is a 50 kW electric motor fueled by a 16.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The Ray requires a rather sluggish 15.9 seconds to reach 62 mph from a standstill. By comparison, the Nissan Leaf can hit 60 mph in less than 10 seconds.
At this point, Kia plans to produce 2,500 Ray EVs, all of which are to be used by the government in Korea. The automaker has no plans to launch the Ray outside of Korea, but there’s no doubt Kia execs are hoping to get an EV on the road in the U.S. sooner rather than later.
