Automakers are certainly responding to consumer demand for higher mileage vehicles, not to mention the stricter fuel efficiency standards that are on the horizon. More cars are now being offered with four-cylinder engines, helping to boost mileage and ease expenditures at the pump.
Today’s four-cylinders aren’t just about boosting MPG either. Thanks to clever turbos, stop/start technology and direct injection, the latest generation of four-cylinders balance fuel economy with performance. Even the all-new BMW 3 Series sports sedan now comes standard with a four-cylinder engine, a first for this “Ultimate Driving Machine.”
In January 2007, the average fuel economy for all new vehicles sold was 20.5 miles per gallon. By March of this year, thanks to the prevalence of four-cylinder engines, average fuel economy was 23.5 mpg — a 15 percent improvement from January 2007.
Engine downsizing is a trend that will undoubtedly help consumers steer clear of the gas stations and maintain a slimmer wallet. Best of all, consumers won’t need to sacrifice anything. Today’s four-cylinders are more powerful than they were just a few years ago thanks to new technology and new methods for making vehicles lighter. Expect to see more four-cylinders as the 2012 model year arrives.
