Land Rover is officially moving forward with plans to build a smaller Range Rover model based on the LRX concept. Although the LRX concept sported only three doors, executives at Land Rover have already hinted that the production version will need to include a five door body style to help ensure its success. Based on the LR2 platform, the LRX will retain much of the stylish lines of the concept, and will be positioned against the new Mercedes-Benz GLK, the Audi Q5, as well as the BMW X3. Although the Range Rover badge means off-road capabilities are assured, the LRX will also be small, lightweight, and efficient. While much of the production design has already been completed, the baby Range Rover is still two years away from its U.S. launch. Luckily for Land Rover, the increasing demand in the compact premium SUV segment will likely keep consumers eager for such a vehicle until it arrives.
