While it may at first seem odd that Volkswagen’s first hybrid offering is a 380 horsepower midsize SUV, the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid is actually pretty impressive. Serving as the replacement for the current top-of-the-line V8 model, the 2011 Touareg Hybrid delivers 333 horsepower via its supercharged direct injection V6 TSI engine combined with another 47 horsepower from is electric motor. With the help of an eight speed automatic transmission, not to mention 400 fewer pounds than the current model, the new Tuareg Hybrid delivers approximately 21 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. This is highly competitive when compared to other offerings in this segment that deliver similar power. This is also impressive considering that the Touareg Hybrid can go from zero to 62 mph in just 6.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 150 mph. Naturally this new Tuareg still features the grip of VW’s 4MOTION® all-wheel drive system and a stellar balance of refinement and utility.
